How does eyebrow threading work?
A cotton thread is doubled and twisted, then rolled across the brow line. The twist catches small rows of hair and lifts them out. Because the thread only touches the hairs it is aimed at, I can take one stray hair and leave the one beside it. That is why threading suits brows so well: as I put it when Kurves opened, with thread “I can give you a shape”.
The American Academy of Dermatology describes threading as as precise as plucking but much faster, and a good option where you want to keep some hair, like the brows.
How do you decide my brow shape?
We start with your natural arch. I look at where your brow starts, where it lifts and where it ends, and shape along that line so it suits your face. If you want something different (thinner, fuller, straighter, or just tidy), tell me before we start. If you are growing your brows out, say so and I will take only the strays.
A first visit is a good time to talk it through. Bring a photo of a shape you like if that helps.
Does eyebrow threading hurt?
It feels different for everyone. Some people feel a quick sting with each pass, others barely notice it. When Kurves opened, I told the Farragut Press that a few people find it hurts and a few don’t, because everybody is different. Brows take about 10 minutes, so it is over quickly. If an area feels sensitive, tell me.
How long does threading last, and how often should I come back?
The American Academy of Dermatology says threading results can last 4 to 5 weeks. How fast your brows grow back depends on your hair. Booking your next visit before the shape grows out makes the shape easier to hold. To confirm how many weeks do you usually suggest between brow appointments?
Do you thread men’s eyebrows?
Yes. Men’s eyebrow threading is $17 and takes about 10 minutes. If you want a clean, natural look, say so: the gap between the brows cleared, strays tidied and nothing that looks “done”. Tell me how much you want taken off.
Should I add my upper lip?
If you already thread your lip, booking both together saves time and a little money. Brows and lip are $20 together, against $21 booked separately, and take about 15 minutes in one visit. See Upper lip threading.
Can I come with makeup on?
You don’t have to arrive bare-faced. When Kurves opened, my answer was that you don’t need to remove your makeup for threading. To confirm is that still your answer today? Brow pencil or gel on the brows themselves can make the hairs harder to see, so leave the brows clean if you can.
Is threading OK for sensitive skin?
Usually, yes. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that threading causes little irritation, so it is an option for sensitive or acne-prone skin. If you use isotretinoin or a prescription retinoid such as tretinoin, ask your doctor or dermatologist before any hair removal on the face. The same AAD page advises against waxing on those medicines because they thin the skin. Tell me at the start if you use either, or if your skin is irritated or broken.
What should I do after eyebrow threading?
Keep it simple for the rest of the day. Your skin may look a little pink right after; let it settle and keep your hands off the area. Skip scrubs on the brow area that day. If anything looks unusual or worries you, check with your doctor. To confirm your own aftercare advice for brows
