Getting married? Bridal henna has its own page: bridal henna in Farragut and Knoxville.
If you want henna for several people, call or email before you book. To confirm do you do henna for a group of guests, and at the studio or at events?
How does a henna appointment work?
You pick a design, Fariyal draws it on your skin with henna paste, and the paste stays on while the color moves into your skin. Here is what to expect:
- Choose your design. Tell Fariyal what you have in mind when you book or call: a small motif, a band, a full hand.
- The paste goes on. Henna body art is made by applying henna paste to the skin.
- Let it sit. The color needs time. A study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health notes that natural henna staining takes 4 to 12 hours.
- Remove and care for it. Fariyal will tell you how long to keep the paste on and how to look after the stain. To confirm how long to keep the paste on, and the stain-care advice you give
Plan your day around it. If the henna is for an event, leave time for the paste to sit before you need your hands.
What color will my henna be?
Real henna gives a brown, orange-brown or reddish-brown color. That is how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes the tint henna typically produces. The British Skin Foundation puts it simply: real henna is orange/brown.
So a stain that looks jet black is a sign that something else has been added to the paste. The next section explains why that matters.
Is henna safe? What is “black henna”?
Natural henna is a plant dye. “Black henna” is different: it usually has a hair-dye chemical added to make it dark, and that chemical can cause serious skin reactions. Here is what the health sources say:
- The added chemical is often PPD. The FDA says the ingredient used to blacken henna is often a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD). By law, PPD is not permitted in cosmetics meant to go on the skin.
- Reactions can be strong. DermNet, a dermatology reference, says high levels of PPD in black temporary tattoos can cause intense blistering reactions within one to two days.
- They can last a lifetime. After a reaction, DermNet says lifelong sensitivity to PPD is likely. The British Skin Foundation adds that this raises the risk of a severe reaction to hair dye later.
- Brown products can contain extras too. The FDA notes that even brown “henna” products may contain other ingredients to make the stain darker or last longer.
- The FDA’s position on skin use. The FDA approves henna only as a hair dye. It has not approved henna for direct application to the skin, and it has received reports of skin injuries from products marketed as henna and as “black henna.” To confirm OK to show this FDA line on your henna page? If not, we remove it.
Questions to ask any henna artist, including us:
- What is in your paste?
- Is it plain henna, with no PPD or “black henna” added?
- What color should I expect, and how dark will it get?
Our answer: To confirm what is in your henna paste? Is it natural henna with no PPD or ‘black henna’?
If you have reacted to hair dye or a “black henna” tattoo before, tell Fariyal and ask your doctor before you get henna. If your skin reacts after any henna, get medical advice from a doctor or dermatologist.
How long does henna last?
Henna is a stain, not a permanent tattoo, so it fades. How long it lasts depends on where it is and how you care for it. To confirm how long your henna stains usually last
